Applied Design: The Art of Vehicle Wrapping
Designing vehicle wraps is an incredibly complex challenge where 2D graphics must translate perfectly onto unique 3D surfaces. Over the years, I designed, printed, and installed full / partial wraps for numerous commercial fleets and personal vehicles, mastering the intersection of digital precision and physical application without reliance on any vehicle template database.
The Challenge
Vehicle wrapping is unforgiving. Unlike a web page, you can't resize the canvas. The challenge was to create high-impact branding that remained legible at 60mph while navigating complex body curves, aftermarket parts, and safe zones. This required creating 1:1 scale templates and managing massive print files to ensure zero pixelation on output. Each installation demanded not just design skills, but physical craftsmanship to stretch and mold vinyl without distortion.

Production Stats
The Process: Digital to Physical
Templating & Measurement
Extensive, and accurate measurements were required to create any graphic, and numerous photos had to be taken from multiple angles to mock up potential designs for client approval.
Design & Layout
After our ideal design was agreed upon, I began creating 1:1 individual prints for each vehicle component, with the intention of aligning them perfectly. It was necessary to leave room for bleed and hand-trimming.
Production & Install
Hands-on execution included RIP software management, industrial vinyl printing, laminating, and the meticulous physical installation process requiring patience, precision, propane, and many burnt fingertips.
